Healing Helping

Healing Helping is the philosophy and act of supporting people to navigate the challenges of life, often with a focus on supporting individuals through complex health journeys. Healing Helping is a wholistic approach that seeks to humanize and affirm those touched by it, be it practitioner, person in need, or community.

Healing Helper practice

Through his creative practice as a community arts-based artist, Spencer Sheehan-Kalina began to engage and make work with a number of different communities in person (across Vancouver Island) and online. Through a number of make-art events, community engaged artwork and community meetings, Spencer became inspired to want to support the care of those in his community as much as possible.

During the Covid19 pandemic Spencer Sheehan-Kalina attended North Island College’s Health Care Assistant Certificate Program in order to better understand the complex care needs of those living through the opioid crisis, while working alongside the Comox Valley Art Gallery’s Walk With Me team. In 2023 Spencer stepped away from his work at the Comox Valley Art Gallery to join the team at Glacier View Lodge, a complex care facility, as an Activity Aid.

He has continued to expand and develop his practice as a Healing Helper while looking for ways in which he can continue to serve and support the communities he participates in. In 2025 Spencer co-founded the Clinic On Wheels in the Comox Valley, a mobile healthcare business, in order to better address gaps and build bridges for those needing additional support with their healthcare journey.

Spencer Sheehan-Kalina currently offers support to the communities he participates in through the Clinic On Wheels, his practice as a creative art-based community artist.

Spencer continues to expand his practice as a community-arts based artist and is pursuing further education in order to be better able to serve these communities.

Spencer currently is a registered Care Aid and holds an Activity Assistant Certificate. He has studied a number of healing modalities including reiki, healing touch, reflexology and champissage (Indian Head Massage).
